Revolutionary Confessions

Confessions are currently: OPEN

Welcome to Revolutionary Confessions, for all your Utena expressing needs! Whether it's regarding the anime, manga, movie, or maybe even us crazy fans, feel free to confess away.
(But please take the time to read the rules first!)

Keep in mind there are spoilers around here. If you're in the process of watching the series, I'd highly suggest not looking any further than this, or at least make sure you have the tag "spoilers" blocked, which bigger spoilers will be tagged with.

Screenshots and artwork are either provided from my own DVDs, or taken from Empty Movement's amazing gallery.

After seeing how Utena reacted to finding out Mikage was behind the Black Rose duelists, I always wondered how she would react if she ever knew how Anthy manipulated all the duelists too, especially Wakaba. In the end, Utena still knew very little of how much Anthy had been pulling the strings. All she ever really found out was that Anthy had been manipulating Utena herself. I imagine their relationship is gonna have to go through a lot before stabilizing once they meet again…

I don’t understand people who ship jury/shiori. They are toxic for each other and they showed that several times during the series. If it was a heterosexual relationship nobody would ship them because it would be seen as a incredibly abusive relationship but because they are both girls it suddenly erases the entire years of their youth they spent abusing each other. Both deserve better and an official picture of both happy in the fencing team post-series doesn’t count as character development

I really hate the hypocrisy among fans when it comes to character complexity. It’s like a majority of fans will agree that all of the characters are very deep, complicated and well worth analyzing, but try for a second to talk about Akio’s motivations, reasons and complexity and you’ll be attacked in an instant. No one seems to bother talking about Akio beyond a stereotypical, two-dimensional bad guy, and it just feels like a huge waste of what’s a really interesting villain.

I usually tolerate the Utena fandom just fine, but one thing I cannot stand is when you get into a discussion about something, and they go “here, I’m linking you to what this other fan said on the subject, it proves you’re wrong”. Seriously, if you can’t even bother to write your own opinions and views on the subject, why are you opening for a discussion in the first place?

I wish we had an expansion on Saionji’s backstory. We don’t really know anything definitive about it except that he was Touga’s friend and (based on his commentary in episode 19) has a poor/non-existenting relationship with his family.

I really would like to do fencing, partly because of Juri. The duel between herself and Miki is amazing

I see a lot of posts about Revolutionary Girl Utena teaching life lessons about sex, gender, and relationships, but this series was kind of toxic to me when I first watched it. I saw the concept of girls being princes and immediately decided I wanted to be a prince too, ignoring the fact that if I am a Prince, someone else has to be an Princess: helpless, submissive, and likely abused (by me). I better appreciate RGU and its themes now, but back then, Utena was not the right role model for me.

I have disliked Shiori forever, hated her even more than Akio who clearly does worse things. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why and now I realize it’s because I’m exactly like her.

I feel like fans can be a little too hard on the characters (with the exceptions of Akio and Mikage), male or female. They’re all young people who have crap situations and are trying to find their way in the world. Do they do bad things? Well yeah, and those things should NOT be excused, but the characters themselves shouldn’t be eternally pinned up and repeatedly crucified for them.

Whenever I see too many negative confessions, I end up submitting light-hearted, fluffy or funny ones as an attempt to calm things down (I know it doesn’t really work tough…)
